Laffy Taffy Funky Party Treat

LAFFY TAFFY

*  1 cup sugar
*  1 Tablespoon cornstarch
*  2/4 cup of light corn syrup
*  2/3 cup water
*  2 Tablespoons margarine or butter
*  1 teaspoon salt
*  2 teaspoons vanilla

First, butter a square pan, 8 X 8 X 2 inches big.  Now, mix the sugar
and the cornstarch in a 2 quart saucepan and then stir in the corn
syrup, water, margarine and the salt.  Heat this mixture to boiling
over medium heat, stirring constantly so as not to burn.  Now, cook
without stirring at all, to 265 degrees on a candy thermometer  or
until a small amount of mixture that you drop into very cold water
forms a hard ball that holds its shape, yet is still pliable.  Now, remove
from heat and stir in vanilla.  Pour this into the buttered pan.

When this is just cool enough to handle without burning yourself, pull the
taffy with lightly buttered hands until it is satiny and stiff.  Now, pull this
into longs strips about 1/2 inch wide, then cut these strips into 1 1/2 inch
pieces, using scissors.  Wipe the scissors first with a little bit of vegetable
oil.  Wrap the individual pieces in plastic wrap or waxed paper.  This
recipe makes about a dozen pieces of taffy.
